Founded in 1957 by German optician Hans Peters, Albany-based Cosmo Optics fabricates custom precision optical components and assemblies, from prototype work through production. In its 22,000-square-foot facility, the privately held company makes optics ranging from 1.5 mm parts to elements exceeding 40 inches, with in-house coating and inspection capabilities. Master Opticians and technicians bring decades of experience to work that the company describes as artisan optical fabrication.
Rayleigh Optical CorporationSince 1987, co-founders Vilma and David Anderson have operated Rayleigh Optical Corporation as a worldwide fabricator of large custom precision optics. The Hanover, Maryland, company specializes in spherical and aspherical components from 0.25 to 1.5 meters, with its mirrors and lenses used at premier astronomical sites including Pan-STARRS and the Dark Energy Survey Instrument. It also extends its shop and expertise to amateur telescope makers through its planned Center for Amateur Optics and Telescope Making.HALETHORPE, MD
Sydor OpticsFounded in 1964 by optical pioneer Stefan Sydor, Rochester-based Sydor Optics manufactures custom precision plano optics, carrying traditional craftsmanship into high-volume production with North America’s largest collection of double-sided polishing machines. Today the company remains family-led by Stefan’s son and grandsons, producing optics for demanding laser, defense, semiconductor and life-science applications. Sydor is American-owned and operated, ISO 9001:2015 certified and ITAR registered.ROCHESTER, NY
Optics Technology, IncOptics Technology, Inc. was established in 1986 by optical engineer Jim Anderson, whose vision was to tackle unusually demanding miniature optical work with the flexibility to make new tools when needed. The Pittsford company designs and builds precision micro-optical systems for customers ranging from university research centers to NASA and global enterprises, often taking projects from prototype to small- or medium-volume production. Its work has included a miniature aerospace shutter and a government surveillance lens assembled entirely in-house.PITTSFORD, NY
Nu-Tek Precision Optical CorporationNu-Tek Precision Optical Corporation grew from a 1987 venture founded by nine master opticians, supervisors, and technicians, many of whom remain part of its core team today. This privately held Maryland small business develops custom precision optics for aerospace and scientific customers, with NASA-qualified flight hardware among its documented work. Its 15,000-square-foot Aberdeen operation supports projects ranging from prototypes to light production.ABERDEEN, MD
