A conversation among founders Emily Bruno, Jeff Ramirez, and Julie Verratti over the 2012 holiday dinner table led to Denizens Brewing Co., which opened as Montgomery County’s first production brewery. Now based in Riverdale Park, the community-minded brewery has grown into a gathering place while producing more than 200 beers and distributing throughout the DMV. Denizens also helped remove barriers that once limited access to local craft beer in Maryland.

• Union Craft BrewingFounded in 2011, Union Craft Brewing makes beer in Baltimore’s Medfield neighborhood, where its brewing operations began with the 2012 release of Duckpin Pale Ale. Now housed in a former Sears warehouse within the Union Collective hub for small local manufacturers, the employee-owned brewery balances brewing tradition with new ideas and operates a taproom and beer garden built around its belief that beer unites people. Its Zadie’s Lager also carries a family story, honoring co-founder Henry “Zadie” Benesch, who worked at the brewery until age 101.BALTIMORE, MD
• 1812 BreweryAs Allegany County’s first farm brewery, 1812 Brewery makes craft beer on its family farm in Cumberland, Maryland. The family-owned operation opened in 2017 in a repurposed barn built in 1812, combining American craft ideas with traditional European brewing techniques.
