Founded in 2004 by an architect and an inventor-attorney, HearthCabinet designs and handcrafts ventless fireplaces that bring a real flame to spaces without a chimney, gas line, or electrical connection. Designed in Manhattan and fabricated by New York craftspeople, its alcohol-gel cartridge system is housed in a locked safety firebox, and the company says its units are the only ventless fireplaces approved for use in New York City. HearthCabinet also works with architects and designers on made-to-measure fireplaces for residential, hospitality, and commercial projects.

• MantelCreteFrom its Cincinnati workshop, MantelCrete makes non-combustible fireplace mantels that capture the look of real timber in cast stone. Artisans cast the profiles from wood beams and moldings taken from real trees—including an antique beam salvaged from an 18th-century Southern Indiana dairy barn—and hand-apply each finish. Made and sourced in Cincinnati, the mantels are fire-rated for indoor and outdoor spaces and can be installed as close as six inches from the fireplace opening.
