In Queensbury, Ludlow Electrochemical Hardware builds hydrogen technology and electrochemical equipment, including fuel-cell test stations and hydrogen-pump platforms. Established in 2014, the company grew from Dr. Ludlow’s electrochemical hydrogen-pump work, which dates to 2006, and operates from a 5,700-square-foot facility with round-the-clock testing capabilities. Ludlow also provides third-party testing and custom design and fabrication for fuel-cell, electrolysis, and hydrogen applications.
Plug Power IncPlug Power develops and manufactures hydrogen fuel-cell and hydrogen-generation technologies as part of an end-to-end hydrogen ecosystem. The company says it created the first commercial market for fuel cells in material handling and has expanded into electrolyzers, hydrogen production and liquefaction, cryogenic infrastructure, and power generation.SLINGERLANDS, NY
Hydrogen Energy Systems, LLCFounded in Akron in 2007, Hydrogen Energy Systems, LLC develops hydrogen-fuel technology for internal-combustion engines, centered on its patented Hydrogen Mixing Block™. The device replaces a carburetor or electronic fuel injector so small engines can run mechanically on 100% compressed hydrogen, and the company has tested the system across engines from 6 to 13 horsepower. HES has also demonstrated the technology in a portable generator and a six-passenger golf shuttle prototype.AKRON, OH
Headwaters Solutions LLCFrom its Ithaca, New York engineering offices and factory, Headwaters Solutions designs and fabricates hydrogen and synthesis-gas plant equipment for heavy industry and clean-energy projects. The privately held firm focuses on smaller-scale hydrogen systems, including steam reformers and PSA purification plants, while also revamping legacy facilities and supplying high-pressure refueling equipment. Its senior team brings more than 100 years of combined experience, and company principals hold more than 40 issued U.S. patents related to hydrogen and syngas applications.ITHACA, NY
Power to HydrogenColumbus-based Power to Hydrogen develops and supplies modular Hybrid AEM electrolysers that split water into hydrogen and oxygen, from 10-kW demonstration units to systems built from 250-kW stacks for installations up to 25 MW. Its technology combines renewable-compatible dynamic operation with lower-cost, non-precious-metal components and a simpler balance of plant, and was invented through a U.S. Department of Energy project. Founded by Dr. Paul Matter and Christopher Holt, the company has piloted its systems with partners including Shell, Enel Green Power and EDP.COLUMBUS, OH
