Since Wilbur Smith started the business in a dirt-floor shed in 1945, Smith Metal Works of Newark has grown into a family-owned manufacturer of salt spreaders and custom-fabricated metal equipment in Newark, New York. The company still produces its 1956 cabbage coring machine and is known for an electric-powered stainless steel pickup spreader design, while also taking on custom projects from industrial parts to architectural work. Smith Metal Works remains a small, multigenerational operation, with three generations of the Raes family having worked there at the same time.
