The 1812 Shoppe is a Cortland County custom woodshop where Craig Vollmer builds furniture, home goods, and keepsakes by hand, carrying on a family woodworking name his father started in Sackets Harbor in 1970. A trained forester, Vollmer works largely with locally sourced New York and Pennsylvania hardwoods that he selects, has milled, and dries for years before turning them into one-off pieces. The shop is also known for giving old materials a second life, including vintage copper boilers remade as storage trunks, and was named Cortland County’s 2025 Small Business of the Year.

The business grew from Lancaster County builder Craig Wolf’s habit of salvaging lumber from old buildings and hand-crafting pieces for local shows, and it now works with Pennsylvania Amish craftsmen on distinctive furniture such as Dutch-inspired shutter cabinets. The Millbrook studio combines clean modern design with Japanese woodworking and traditional joinery, often turning storm-fallen or client-saved trees into “Full Circle” pieces. H.CO was named Best Furniture Maker in the Hudson Valley by the 2025 Chronogram Readers’ Choice Awards.
