Albert Woodworking is a one-person furniture studio where Albert DiBartolomeo has spent more than 30 years shaping wood into distinctive tables, cabinets, benches, and other furnishings. His work draws on Shaker practicality and the influence of makers such as Wharton Esherick, James Krenov, and George Nakashima, while his unusual double life as a university English teacher and professional woodworker gives the shop a distinctly individual character. He works from a garage and basement studio, handling everything from joinery through finishing himself.
Canterbury Woods CreationsAfter leaving a 12-year technology career, founder Francis Twomey turned an oak bed made for his new upstate New York home into Canterbury Woods Creations, a woodworking studio making handmade furniture and custom commissions. Working primarily with domestic hardwoods, Twomey builds one-of-a-kind pieces around a client’s dimensions, space, and ideas rather than producing for quantity. Vicco von Voss Furniture DesignSince 1994, German-born artist and craftsman Vicco von Voss has worked on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, turning locally salvaged and fallen trees into one-of-a-kind contemporary furniture. After studying fine art at Washington College and completing a three-year carpentry apprenticeship in Hamburg, von Voss developed a practice that pairs traditional joinery with designs shaped by each log’s natural curves.
