Since 1994, German-born artist and craftsman Vicco von Voss has worked on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, turning locally salvaged and fallen trees into one-of-a-kind contemporary furniture. After studying fine art at Washington College and completing a three-year carpentry apprenticeship in Hamburg, von Voss developed a practice that pairs traditional joinery with designs shaped by each log’s natural curves. His workshop also takes on timber framing and public art, including the Woodhenge project at Adkins Arboretum.

• Burch Wood CraftingVeteran-owned Burch Wood Crafting hand-builds functional wooden pieces and custom furniture, turning customer ideas into items made for everyday use. Josh founded the shop in 2024 after discovering woodworking through a 2021 connection with German woodworker Florian Koch, and works directly with customers from design through delivery. Its work ranges from personalized kitchen pieces to one-of-a-kind tables and distinctive custom art, including a large Maryland-themed crab.

  George Nakashima WoodworkersFounded by George Nakashima in 1945, this New Hope studio makes one-of-a-kind, made-to-order furniture from individually selected solid-wood boards. The workshop continues Nakashima’s distinctive through-and-through milling tradition, preserving natural edges and irregularities while designers and craftspeople collaborate under the direction of his daughter, Mira Nakashima.   Sun WoodworkingFrom a rural shop in White Hall, Maryland, Sun Woodworking makes custom furniture and teaches hands-on woodworking, with a particular focus on chairmaking and green woodworking. Mike Clarkson draws on work with John Alexander and Drew Langsner, more than 12 years running a sawmill, and teaching experience with Baltimore youth to guide small classes in traditional techniques such as steam bending. The shop also produces steam-bent firewood carriers and benches for Nature Sacred’s urban quiet spaces.WHITE HALL, MD
