About

Founded by George Nakashima in 1945, this New Hope studio makes one-of-a-kind, made-to-order furniture from individually selected solid-wood boards. The workshop continues Nakashima’s distinctive through-and-through milling tradition, preserving natural edges and irregularities while designers and craftspeople collaborate under the direction of his daughter, Mira Nakashima. Its historic home, studio, and workshop were designated a United States National Historic Landmark in 2014.

  • George's Furniture logoGeorge's FurnitureFounded in 1970 by woodworker George Martin, George’s Furniture is a second-generation family-owned shop in Lancaster County that makes custom, solid-hardwood furniture by hand. One craftsman follows each piece from selecting and drying the lumber through construction and finishing, then signs and dates the finished work. Now operated by George’s daughter Juanita and son-in-law Chris Horst, the business continues its old-fashioned, made-to-order approach from its farm workshop outside Maytown.MARIETTA, PA
  • Canterbury Woods Creations logoCanterbury Woods CreationsAfter leaving a 12-year technology career, founder Francis Twomey turned an oak bed made for his new upstate New York home into Canterbury Woods Creations, a woodworking studio making handmade furniture and custom commissions. Working primarily with domestic hardwoods, Twomey builds one-of-a-kind pieces around a client’s dimensions, space, and ideas rather than producing for quantity. The family’s J&J Twomey Collection adds handmade boards and trays crafted by his parents, with a tree planted and a portion of proceeds donated to the American Heart Association for each board or tray sold.VESTAL, NY
  • Country Lane Furniture logoCountry Lane FurnitureFounded in 1989 as a one-room storefront in Annville, Pennsylvania, family-owned Country Lane Furniture now offers custom handcrafted solid-wood furniture made locally by Amish and Mennonite craftsmen. Its 61,000-square-foot showroom grew from those small beginnings while the business kept its focus on detailed construction, locally sourced hardwoods, and pieces designed to be passed down through generations. Country Lane also maintains records of customers’ furniture so matching pieces can be added years later.ANNVILLE, PA
  • Vicco von Voss Furniture Design logoVicco von Voss Furniture DesignSince 1994, German-born artist and craftsman Vicco von Voss has worked on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, turning locally salvaged and fallen trees into one-of-a-kind contemporary furniture. After studying fine art at Washington College and completing a three-year carpentry apprenticeship in Hamburg, von Voss developed a practice that pairs traditional joinery with designs shaped by each log’s natural curves. His workshop also takes on timber framing and public art, including the Woodhenge project at Adkins Arboretum.CHESTERTOWN, MD
