Born in a renovated Burlington, Vermont, gas station in 1978, Ben & Jerry’s has grown from two friends’ scoop shop into an ice cream company with a distinctly activist identity. Its business is organized around a social mission, with campaigns addressing issues such as racial justice while its products use Fairtrade Certified ingredients. The company’s original 1985 factory in Waterbury remains a working production site, making more than 350,000 pints a day.
