For more than 30 years, Chesapeake Shipbuilding has paired naval architecture with shipbuilding in Salisbury to create customized commercial vessels, including passenger ships and tugboats up to 450 feet long. Its 13-acre yard on Maryland’s Wicomico River includes deepwater bulkhead, two construction basins and dedicated hull-fabrication buildings, allowing the company to design, build and deliver complete vessels from one site. Chesapeake’s welders and welding processes are certified by the American Bureau of Shipping and the U.S. Coast Guard.

• Mathews Brothers LLCSince 1995, family-owned-and-operated Mathews Brothers has been building custom boats in Denton for Chesapeake Bay cruising, from a compact sport boat shaped by an Eastern Shore crabbing skiff to its new 51-foot flagship. Customers are invited into the build, choosing the layout and details while the shop combines traditional methods with modern composite construction. The company also keeps boats in service through repairs, refits, storage and brokerage, including dock-to-dock winter storage at Mathews Landing on the Choptank River.DENTON, MD
• Hanwha Philly ShipyardFounded in 1997 through a public-private partnership, Hanwha Philly Shipyard builds and sustains commercial and government vessels at Philadelphia’s historic Navy Yard. Since 2000, the shipyard says it has delivered nearly half of all large, ocean-going Jones Act vessels built in the United States, including ships supporting domestic commerce and national maritime readiness. • The General Ship Repair CorporationFounded on Baltimore’s waterfront in 1924 by Charles Buck Lynch, The General Ship Repair Corporation is a family-owned shipyard that repairs and maintains workboats, tugs, barges, and other vessels. Now under fourth-generation Lynch ownership, the company works from two 1,000-ton floating dry docks and also provides industrial fabrication and repair through its Baltimore Metal Works division.
