Born from founder VaLanDria Smith-Lash’s effort to ease her mother’s lupus-related skin irritation, Coarse Culture makes all-natural whipped shea butter for skin and hair. The Black-owned business is headquartered in Oxford, Ohio, where its products are made through Miami University’s College@Elm Innovation Center and students gain hands-on experience through the Culture Cohort. Smith-Lash began developing the product at age 14 and later launched Coarse Culture publicly while attending college.
