CounterEv HOME handcrafted furniture from reclaimed bowling lanes, turning old alley wood into custom tables and other one-of-a-kind pieces. Founded in 2008 by Jim Malone, the business grew from a 10-by-10 booth at Brooklyn Flea into a maker whose furniture appeared in more than 200 Shake Shack locations worldwide, 30-plus Starbucks, and eight early Sweetgreen locations. CounterEv announced that it would close permanently after 15 years, with its final orders taken through January 15.
FuugsPhiladelphia’s Fuugs designs and hand-builds wooden furniture from urban trees the founders salvage, mill, dry, and craft themselves. Founded in 2016 by sculptors and life-and-business partners Greg Fuguet and Kristen Snow, the studio developed the Yarrow Collection around durable, artful forms that keep reclaimed wood out of the waste stream. The family-owned Nottingham, Pennsylvania, business combines Michael’s 38 years of carpentry experience with Kelly’s design and finishing guidance, while three generations contribute to the operation. The business grew from Lancaster County builder Craig Wolf’s habit of salvaging lumber from old buildings and hand-crafting pieces for local shows, and it now works with Pennsylvania Amish craftsmen on distinctive furniture such as Dutch-inspired shutter cabinets.
