Founded by University of Cincinnati biomedical engineering students, Enable Cincy is a volunteer nonprofit that uses 3D printing to design and provide free upper-limb prosthetics and assistive devices for people with disabilities. Since starting in 2016, the student-led organization has developed 10 successful products and delivered devices across the United States and to three other countries, combining patient-focused design with hands-on engineering education.

Its community-built models turn visual concepts into objects people can explore by touch and keep, with more than 6,500 models sent to recipients in 35 countries and territories. Abilities In MotionEstablished in Cincinnati in 1995 by prosthetist Thomas L. Walsh, Abilities In Motion provides custom prosthetic care and rehabilitative services through two Greater Cincinnati facilities. The ABC-accredited practice is especially distinctive for its removable Immediate Post-Operative Prosthesis, pioneered by Walsh, and for custom 3D-printed prostheses developed after research with the University of Cincinnati. Open BionicsFounded in 2014 by robotic-hand tinkerer Joel Gibbard and Samantha Payne, Bristol-based Open Bionics designs and manufactures 3D-printed bionic arms for children and adults with limb differences. Its Hero Arm was the world’s first clinically approved 3D-printed bionic hand, combining custom fitting with a deliberately expressive look and access to interchangeable covers.
