What began as Eddie and Beth McDonald’s decade-long winemaking passion became Butler County’s first winery when Hanover Winery opened in 2009 on their rural Hanover Township farm. The couple turned a hobby shed into a tasting room and grew the property into a vineyard and wine-production operation known for more than two dozen award-winning wines, with wood-fired pizza added in 2023. Hanover Winery is currently closed as the owners retire after more than 16 years, with a possible reopening dependent on a new owner.
Yellow Butterfly WineryYellow Butterfly Winery makes nearly two dozen sweet fruit, semi-sweet and dry wines in a restored, more-than-125-year-old barn on a Midwestern Ohio farm and cattle ranch. Now owned by Krissy and Ed Haas, the winery pairs its bottles with a rural gathering place where visitors can listen to live music, watch alpacas graze and browse work by local artists. Hunt CountryHunt Country is a seventh-generation Finger Lakes farm that grew grapes for generations before the Hunt family established its winery in 1981. The winery helped pioneer the Keuka Lake Wine Trail and crafted wine for 45 years, closing in 2025 while the farm continues under Suzanne Hunt and Matt Kelly.
