Built around an antibody platform derived from the densely packed coat of the African trypanosome, Hepione Therapeutics develops immunotherapeutics aimed at preventing opioid overdoses. The Manhattan biotech startup’s lead program uses VAST and its Hyper Speed selection process to identify monoclonal antibodies that bind fentanyl and block its passage to the brain; preclinical studies reported protection from near-lethal fentanyl exposure. The underlying platform originated in Dr. Nina Papavasiliou’s laboratory in 2008 and has been developed across two continents.
