Martha Spak is a public artist and designer who creates site-specific art and environmental graphics for civic, healthcare, and institutional spaces. Working through a collaborative studio practice, she develops durable, context-responsive installations ranging from sculpture and wall-based work to interpretive and wayfinding elements. Her projects include permanent navigation sculptures in Kirkland, Washington, and healthcare commissions for institutions such as the National Institutes of Health and the University of Michigan.

A former energy-sector private equity lawyer who became an artist in 2016, she develops her work through a rigorous physical process shaped by early ballet training and a theater upbringing.   Hot Mud StudioFrom her basement studio in Kingston, Susan Whelan creates one-of-a-kind ceramic art, including commissioned pieces for homes and important milestones. Whelan found clay in her fortieth year after studying fashion design, and her work often follows the medium’s transformation from wet earth to durable, colorful art.
