Rooted in Calabria and rebuilt on Long Island, Claudia Purita operates One Woman Wines & Vineyards, an entirely estate-grown and produced winery in Southold. She hand-planted much of the vineyard herself and converted the property’s former potato barns into the winery after purchasing the farm in 2001 and selling its development rights. The certified-sustainable vineyard and winery reflect her focus on self-reliance, low-impact farming, and careful stewardship of the land.
Bet the Farm WineryFounded in 2006 by Nancy Tisch, Bet the Farm Winery is a woman-owned Finger Lakes winery producing fruit-forward, food-friendly wines from its Trumansburg vineyard and carefully selected regional fruit. Nancy and Kit Kalfs planted the Jacob Thomas Vineyard in 2018, later harvesting their first estate reds in 2020, and today welcome visitors to a deliberately quiet tasting room overlooking the Cayuga Lake valley. Rose Hill VineyardsSet in a 125-year-old barn on Long Island’s North Fork, Rose Hill Vineyards grows grapes and makes estate wines as part of a small winery-and-inn experience. Its 28 acres under vine are farmed sustainably with minimal intervention, while solar panels and a wind turbine supply the energy for the winery, cellar, vineyard and farmhouse inn. Mattebella VineyardsOn Long Island’s North Fork, Mattebella Vineyards is a small family farm and artisanal winery making old-world-style wines from its own vineyard in Southold. Mark and Christine Tobin purchased the property in 2005, and the estate’s 22-acre parcel is tended by hand with sustainable practices and no mechanical harvesting. Black Ankle VineyardsFounded by former management consultants Ed Boyce and Sarah O’Herron, Black Ankle Vineyards grows, makes, and bottles wines entirely from grapes cultivated on its Maryland farms. The operation began with its first plantings in 2003 and 2004 and now farms 108 acres of vines across 577 acres, with sustainability built into everything from vineyard work to a tasting room made largely from materials grown or gathered on the property.
