Born from a family printing trade, Pioneer Printing has produced commercial and letterpress work in New York’s Finger Lakes since Joe founded the shop in Trumansburg in 1985. Now based in Lodi, the shop keeps an 1890s Chandler & Price hand-fed press and a collection of hand-set type—some more than 120 years old—alongside newer digital equipment. It handles custom projects as well as tactile letterpress calling and business cards, using recycled papers and vegetable-based inks where possible.
Woodside PressFounded in 1993 in Queens, Woodside Press is a traditional letterpress studio that prints and binds finely crafted work from its Brooklyn Navy Yard shop. Its distinctive strength is a large working collection of handset type alongside two Linotype machines and a Ludlow caster, making it one of New York City’s notable homes for hot-metal typography.
