The nonprofit PRR T1 Steam Locomotive Trust is building Pennsylvania Railroad T1 No. 5550, a new example of the iconic 4-4-4-4 duplex steam locomotive class whose 52 original engines were all scrapped. Driven by volunteers, engineers, and supporters around the world, the Trust is recreating the art deco locomotive for mainline excursion service and plans to pursue a steam-locomotive speed record. The project also uses modern engineering and alternative-fuel research to explore how steam can remain part of railroad heritage.
