Born in Seattle in 1950 and self-taught, Stephen Hansen creates sculpture and paintings, including his distinctive paper-mâché painters set into acrylic-on-canvas works. He began the “Great Moments in Art” series in 2014 as a break from sculpture, imagining famous paintings being made by the painters themselves. Hansen received New Mexico’s Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2009 and has exhibited widely since 1975.
