At Industry City in Brooklyn, Sergey Levchin’s Waxwing Studio makes fine, freestanding furniture designed around the individual client. What began as Levchin’s personal pastime grew into a side gig and then his main work a little over a decade ago, with commissions developed collaboratively from sketches, reference images, or practical requirements. The studio’s work ranges from sculptural standalone pieces to highly tailored furniture that solves the particular needs of a room.
Cathartic Reindeer StudiosCathartic Reindeer Studios is a Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn custom carpentry and design studio making one-of-a-kind furniture, woodworking projects, and retail installations. Principal designer Johnathon Cramer develops each piece with the client, using locally sourced materials and handcrafting the work in the Brooklyn shop. Bowen Liu StudioIn New York City, Bowen Liu Studio creates artistic furniture, lighting, and objects that treat material research as part of the design, including furniture-scale cast-glass work. The studio makes 90% of its wood collections by hand in its New York studio, with most pieces made to order and customizable in materials, finishes, and size.
