Founded in Glen Burnie in 2013, Diagnostic Biochips develops neural probes and recording systems that let researchers measure brain activity inside intact organoids and other neural models. Its SomaFocus platform combines high-density silicon probes with automated depth recording, real-time analysis, and cloud-based data storage, extending electrophysiology beyond surface-level measurements. The company grew from technology developed at the University of Michigan and through Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus, with more than $6 million in NIH and DARPA research funding.
