Founded in 2002 through the merger of Kobe Steel’s superconducting-wire business and Japan Magnet Technology’s magnet business, Japan Superconductor Technology (JASTEC) makes superconducting wire and magnets for research, medical and industrial use. Its work includes cryogen-free magnets that operate without liquid helium, high-field research magnets reaching 20 tesla, and high-performance magnets for NMR systems. Based in Kobe with 150 employees and wholly owned by JEOL, JASTEC traces its technical roots to superconducting-wire research begun at Kobe Steel in 1964.

SuperPower IncSince its formation in 2000, SuperPower Inc. has developed and commercially manufactured second-generation high-temperature superconducting tape and REBCO wires in Glenville, New York. Its products carry current with essentially zero resistance under cryogenic conditions, supporting demanding work in high-field magnets, power systems, fusion research and other advanced applications. Its 41,000-square-foot facility has annual capacity exceeding 10,000 kilometers of wire, and the company’s patented continuous tube forming and filling process helped move MgB₂ wire from research into commercial manufacturing.
