Founded by Kim Opperman in 2006, Socks for Soldiers Inc. is an Ohio nonprofit that organizes hand knit sock donations and care packages for American service members in the Middle East and Afghanistan. The volunteer effort gained 501(c)(3) status in 2007 and has sent about 20,000 pairs of all-season wool socks, supported by a membership of roughly 2,000 people worldwide. Known to its members as “Sarge,” Opperman built the organization around a broad knitting community that also welcomes donors and other volunteers.
