Its Toledo studio uses antique presses, movable lead and wood type, and hand-mixed ink to give contemporary pieces a distinctly tactile, personal character. The owner also teaches and mentors others in letterpress techniques, helping carry the craft into its next generation.

Laughing Owl PressFounded by Joe and Andrea Lanich in 2010, Laughing Owl Press is a Kane, Pennsylvania letterpress shop that turns original designs into tactile, hand-printed work. The couple rescued antique Heidelberg and Chandler & Price presses from a basement near Philadelphia and built the business around preserving letterpress as a living craft. Woodside PressFounded in 1993 in Queens, Woodside Press is a traditional letterpress studio that prints and binds finely crafted work from its Brooklyn Navy Yard shop. Its distinctive strength is a large working collection of handset type alongside two Linotype machines and a Ludlow caster, making it one of New York City’s notable homes for hot-metal typography.
