Since 2010, Rochester’s Virgin Wood Type Manufacturing Company has carved end-grain hard maple into pantograph-cut wood type for letterpress printers. Founded by the late Bill Jones and Geri McCormick around a machine originally built by the American Wood Type Manufacturing Company, it grew from 23 fonts to a selection of more than 40, combining revived American and Victorian designs with new faces created for wood.
Woodside PressFounded in 1993 in Queens, Woodside Press is a traditional letterpress studio that prints and binds finely crafted work from its Brooklyn Navy Yard shop. Its distinctive strength is a large working collection of handset type alongside two Linotype machines and a Ludlow caster, making it one of New York City’s notable homes for hot-metal typography.
